Michael Stewart James – Studio 2023

Michael Stewart James is a Scottish-born, UK-based artist. He studied a BA in fine Art Painting at Northbrook College 2003 and gained a Masters in Fine Arts at Central Saint Martins, University of The Arts, London 2010.

His work explores the seductive power of images and the complex nature of existence that shape and give form to the world around us.

Composed of rich colour, figuration and abstraction, his highly detailed paintings, collages and drawings are steeped in traditional methods of making, infused with the artist’s fervent imagination that summon forth past periods of art such as, surrealism, hard edged abstraction to Pop Art, drawing on a multiplicity of sources from mythology, religion, pop culture, art history, to highly personal experiences and perceptions.
